The essay explores the dynamics of self-portraiture in Orlan’s “Carnal Art”, demonstrating how the French artist’s intent to shape her body as an artwork results in failure because of a series of ungovernable body’s internal mechanisms, which prevent a complete aestheticization process. In support of this perspective, two different Orlan’s works are taken into consideration: The Reincarnation of Sainte Orlan surgical performances (1990-1993) and the Orlanoïde robot (2018).

Abstract

The essay explores the dynamics of self-portraiture in Orlan’s “Carnal Art”, demonstrating how the French artist’s intent to shape her body as an artwork results in failure because of a series of ungovernable body’s internal mechanisms, which prevent a complete aestheticization process. In support of this perspective, two different Orlan’s works are taken into consideration: The Reincarnation of Sainte Orlan surgical performances (1990-1993) and the Orlanoïde robot (2018).
