Access to higher education by students with disabilities represents one of the key challenges of international political agendas in response to which, starting with the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, specific Post-Secondary Education Programs (PSE) for young adults with intellectual disabilities have been promoted. This paper aims at providing an overview of these American PSE for students with disabilities (including intellectual one), deepening the legislation underlying these experiences and the main declinations that it assumes in higher education institutions overseas. Furthermore, through the presentation of their characteristics and the analysis of the main facilitators and barriers identified by the sector literature, we would outline some possible ideas to reflect in the conclusion on the inclusive process of young adults with intellectual disabilities in higher education.
