The author examines the events related to the birth of the State of Kosovo in the perspective of the history of Public Law. He first describes the institutional structure of pre-socialist Serbia and of socialist Yugoslavia. He then moves on to analyse how the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation – notwithstanding the tragic internal conflicts and the role played by international organisations (UN, NATO, and now EU) – progressively opened the way to the proclamation, in February 2008, of the independent Republic of Kosovo.
