AbstractThe aim of the present paper is to show a successful way to bring together methods and practices of traditionally separated domains. The focus is put on the very first steps in the life of the product in which new products are defined with the use of systematic innovation tools (e.g. TRIZ) and by a proper method for patent investigation developed by the authors. A practical case study regarding a safety device for transport systems (e.g. trains, ships, etc.) will explain step by step the way in which patent investigation, systematic innovation and conceptual design expertise and practices can be linked together.
