The challenge eco-design has to face is to perform functions to fulfil a need or to provide a benefit to the customer/user, while keeping into account products interactions with the environment along all the lifecycle. New eco-products, processes or services must be assessed towards their global cost that includes both economic and environment related costs. The present paper, after describing the state of the art of conventional eco-design tools, shows a new set of operative guidelines derived from TRIZ [A1] to address sustainability issues. The original version of TRIZ Laws of evolution, opportunely re-discovered and developed, together with other TRIZ concepts is used to define the new set of guidelines. A comparison among traditional tools and new operative TRIZ-based guidelines is proposed in order to highlight common points and discuss differences.
