This paper aims at analyzing the different sources and provenance of some episodes in Theseus’ saga, particularly Theseus’ divine descendance from Poseidon, which seems to derive from Troizen’s local traditions, and the abduction of Helen, connected with Spartan traditions. Both myths were adopted by Athens between the sixth and fifth century BC and modified in order to fulfil the ideological requirements embedded into the figure of the new Athenian national hero.

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the different sources and provenance of some episodes in Theseus’ saga, particularly Theseus’ divine descendance from Poseidon, which seems to derive from Troizen’s local traditions, and the abduction of Helen, connected with Spartan traditions. Both myths were adopted by Athens between the sixth and fifth century BC and modified in order to fulfil the ideological requirements embedded into the figure of the new Athenian national hero.
