As the more famous Open Letter on Translating (1530), these Sommarien über die Psalmen und ursachen des dolmetschens (1533) are the mature result of a continuous theoretical reflection on translating which characterized the revision, by Luther and his collaborators, of the German version of the Psalter first and of the whole Bible later on. A rich section devoted to Psalms exegesis comes after an introduction in which Luther expounds the basic principles which he followed throughout his translation of the Holy Writ and stresses his conception of translation as a linguistic mediation with specific characteristics. If his Letter on Translating is informed by a bitter controversy against Papists and plagiarists, the text illustrates Luther’s position on translation more quietly and objectively and through many examples.

Come la più famosa Lettera sul tradurre (1530), questi Compendi sui salmi e sulle questioni del tradurre (1533) sono il maturo risultato della riflessione teorica sulla traduzione maturata nel corso del lavoro che vide Lutero e i suoi collaboratori impegnati nella revisione della versione tedesca del Salterio e successivamente dell’intera Bibbia. Ad una più corposa parte dedicata all’esegesi dei Salmi, lo scritto fa precedere un’introduzione in cui Lutero espone e chiarisce i principi fondamentali che lo hanno guidato nella stesura della traduzione delle Scritture e ribadisce con forza la sua concezione dell’attività di traduzione come operazione di mediazione linguistica dotata di sue specifiche peculiarità. Se nella Lettera domina la polemica contro i “Papisti” e i plagiatori, le “questioni sul tradurre” vengono esposte con maggiore calma e oggettività, sulla scorta di numerosi esempi.
