Yves Bonnefoy’s work (1923-2016) is characterized by an intense chromatism. The red color takes in it a natural, musical, existential, mythical and religious connotation keeping progressively distance from any referential and descriptive value to acquire a fundamental symbolic depth. This paper, after a theorical introduction to the Bonnefoy’s theory of color, focuses on some poetical collections, the essay Le Nuage rouge, the novel-autobiographical essay L’Écharpe rouge, and others essays about the Arthurian legend, in order to show how this color and his dissemination in Bonnefoy’s work belongs to a sort of critical chromatism who could explain his moral significance and his vision of the world and literature.

L’œuvre d’Yves Bonnefoy (1923-2016) est caractérisée par un intense chromatisme. La couleur rouge y assume une connotation naturelle, musicale, existentielle, mythique et religieuse qui s’éloigne progressivement de toute valeur référentielle et descriptive pour acquérir une profondeur symbolique fondamentale. En prenant en considération, après une préalable introduction à la théorie de la couleur, quelques recueils poétiques, l’essai Le Nuage rouge, le roman-essai autobiographique L’Écharpe rouge, ainsi que des études sur la légende arthurienne et la gnose, cet article se propose de réfléchir sur la valeur essentielle de cette couleur et sur sa dissémination dans les écrits de l’auteur, à même de montrer comment elle se charge, par ce qu’on appellera un chromatisme critique, d’une signification morale décisive pour la compréhension de son existence, de sa vision du monde et de son écriture.
