Alcaeus was born in Lebos at the end of the seventh century BC and was a contemporary of Sappho. He is one of the main lyric poets of his age and a representant of the great tradition of Aeolic lyric poetry. This volume introduces the readers to his life and poetry, and comments some of his most important odes and fragments.
