With Don Milani the period of post-war democratic pedagogy also closes, which had entrusted the school not only with the task of facilitating the entry of the masses into the State, but, precisely with Don Milani, it had conceived for the last time the idea of a general reform of the moral and intellectual bases of the life of the lower classes.

Il problema del popolo sta al centro delle riflessioni educative e della pratica magistrale dell'Italia democratica. Con don Milani si entra in un contesto differente rispetto agli autori finora trattati. Il popolo di don Milani è infatti prima di ogni altra cosa «creatura» di Dio, la cui forma originaria è stata sepolta sotto secoli di sfruttamento ed ingiustizia. Alla scuola è assegnato il compito di riportare in luce tale forma mentre al prete maestro spetta il compito di fornire con il linguaggio gli strumenti perché il popolo possa prendere parte alla vita che lo aspetta all'altezza della pagina di storia che l'epoca si appresta a girare. Carico di risonanze profetiche, il discorso educativo di don Milani si muove, tra Esperienze pastorali e Lettera a una professoressa, lungo un tracciato che accompagna la storia del cristianesimo in Italia fuori dai quadri ideologici della Chiesa di Pio XII, incontro alle grandi trasformazioni che il Paese vive a cavallo degli anni Sessanta. Con don Milani si chiude anche la stagione della pedagogia democratica del dopoguerra che aveva affidato alla scuola non solo il compito di facilitare l'ingresso delle masse nello Stato, ma appunto con don Milani aveva concepito per l'ultima volta l'idea di una riforma generale delle basi morali e intellettuali della vita delle classi subalterne.
