Abstract

This article analyzes the different approaches to the Colonial constitutions and legal systems, with particular attention to the British and French experiences of expansion beyond the seas. The model of the so called indirect rule is in opposition from the theoretical point of view to the model of assimilation, but in practice the application of the two models was complex and mixed. In the context of European colonization, the Italian (sub-)model in North and East Africa was in some ways original, influenced by not only the French model but also the British one.
