The focus of the essay is on the Medieval and early modern artistic representations of the “miracle of the black leg” by the saints Cosmas and Damian, taking into consideration their contemporary relevance in relation to organ transplantation surgery. Using the original art-historical context as a starting point, the article discusses the more recent reappropriations of the theme from an interdisciplinary perspective, to identify the visual dynamics inscribed in it and its role in accepting the hybrid bodies proposed by today's surgery.
