The present chapter discusses cross-linguistic interference in the acquisition of L2 Polish. This case is particularly noteworthy in that in the present historical context, Polish is the object of acquisition by a great number of speakers of closely related Slavic languages, which can effec- tively function as bridge languages in a communicative situation characterised by the avail- ability of intercomprehension strategies. After a brief review of the main opposing theoreti- cal positions, the paper will describe the rationale and main results of a large-scale empirical project devoted to a description of L2 Polish acquisition by speakers of East Slavic Languages. The discussion will focus on a few major points concerning the research and language teach- ing implications of the findings, including the development of specialised language teaching resources and approaches for L2 Polish, the choice of the bridge language for an intercompre- hension-based programme and the perspective opportunities for L2 Polish teaching.

Abstract
The present chapter discusses cross-linguistic interference in the acquisition of L2 Polish. This case is particularly noteworthy in that in the present historical context, Polish is the object of acquisition by a great number of speakers of closely related Slavic languages, which can effec- tively function as bridge languages in a communicative situation characterised by the avail- ability of intercomprehension strategies. After a brief review of the main opposing theoreti- cal positions, the paper will describe the rationale and main results of a large-scale empirical project devoted to a description of L2 Polish acquisition by speakers of East Slavic Languages. The discussion will focus on a few major points concerning the research and language teach- ing implications of the findings, including the development of specialised language teaching resources and approaches for L2 Polish, the choice of the bridge language for an intercompre- hension-based programme and the perspective opportunities for L2 Polish teaching.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
