"Popolarizzazione" e "varietà" nella rivista "Europa" di Friedrich Schlegel

The question from which this essay starts is whether Europa, the journal published by Friedrich Schlegel in four issues between 1803 and 1805, still retains the nature of discussion organ and 'observatory' of national and international literature carried out from the Athenaeum magazine between 1798 and 1800. In Europe, Schlegel sheds the role of commentator on contemporary cultural and political customs, which he had exhibited in the review edited with his brother August Wilhelm, to wear those of the historiographer intent on reconstructing the sense of of Western humanism. Therefore, he analyzes the two main concepts that animate the Schlegelian project in France, "popularization" and "variety" and shows how, once the era of 'reviews'/ Notizen has been abandoned as a means of updating the German public on the already achieved progress of humanistic and scientific-naturalistic studies, the time has now come to promote a broader Bildung der Menschheit.

Il quesito dal quale prende le mosse questo saggio è se Europa, la rivista pubblicata a cura di Friedrich Schlegel in quattro numeri tra il 1803 e il 1805, conservi ancora la natura di organo di discussione e di ‘osservatorio’ della letteratura nazionale e internazionale svolto dalla rivista Athenaeum tra il 1798 e il 1800. Schlegel si spoglia in Europa dei panni di commentatore dei costumi culturali e politici contemporanei, che aveva esibito nella rivista curata con il fratello August Wilhelm, per indossare quelli dello storiografo intento a ricostruire nel presente il senso dell’umanesimo occidentale. Dunque, analizza i due concetti principali che animano il progetto schlegeliano in Francia, “popolarizzazione” e “varietà” e mostra come, una volta abbandonata l’epoca delle ‘recensioni’/ Notizen come mezzo per aggiornare il pubblico tedesco sul già conseguito avanzamento degli studi umanistici e di quelli scientifico-naturalistici è giunto ora il tempo di promuovere una Bildung der Menschheit di più ampio respiro.
