Un'autobiografia fra confessioni e bugie. Zeno e l'identità dello scrittore

The affinities between Svevo's biography and the life of his characters have been identified and analyzed also on the basis of the indications, not always worthy of faith, that Svevo himself provided to his first critics, so much so that the figures of Svevo and Zeno end up to overlap at least partially even in the imagination of the most savvy readers. In fact, Svevo managed to create, with extraordinary skill, a character who is imprinted in the memory of the reader with surprising clarity. Freudian psychoanalysis, which Svevo resorts to to stage Zeno's illness and to give life to a lying and unreliable narrator, also proves to be an invaluable tool for creating a character that is all the more true the more subject to errors of perspective. In fact, Zeno looks at his past without the certainty of being able to see it clearly, subject as it is to the deformation impressed on him by memory and by the unconscious demands of those who remember. It is precisely the solutions found by Svevo to represent this systematic deformation of the past, with the voice problems involved in staging the lie, that make Zeno's Conscience a great classic of the twentieth century.

Le affinità fra la biografia di Svevo e la vita dei suoi personaggi sono state individuate e analizzate anche sulla scorta delle indicazioni, non sempre degne di fede, che Svevo stesso ha fornito ai suoi primi critici, tanto che le figure di Svevo e di Zeno finiscono per sovrapporsi almeno parzialmente anche nell'immaginazione dei lettori più smaliziati. Svevo è riuscito infatti a creare, con straordinaria perizia, un personaggio che si imprime nella memoria di chi legge con sorprendente nitore. La psicoanalisi freudiana, a cui Svevo ricorre per mettere in scena la malattia di Zeno e per dare vita a un narratore bugiardo e inattendibile, si rivela uno strumento preziosissimo anche per la creazione di un personaggio tanto più vero quanto più soggetto ad errori di prospettiva. Zeno guarda infatti al suo passato senza la certezza di poterlo vedere chiaramente, soggetto com'è alla deformazione impressagli dalla memoria e alle istanze dell'inconscio di chi ricorda. Sono proprio le soluzioni trovate da Svevo per rappresentare questa sistematica deformazione del passato, con i problemi di voce che comporta la messa in scena della bugia, a fare della Coscienza di Zeno un grande classico del Novecento.
