Henri-Irenée Marrou. From the Rome Book to Saint Augustin. The Italian themes Henri Marrou, a key figure in the history of education, was also a complex and rich intellectual and historian who coupled French culture with Italian formation to build a unique cultural profile. In this article, Marrou’s Italian years are analyzed in order to ascertain features of his thought derived from Italian experiences, especially his reflection around early 20th-century music, history and spirituality, and explain how he conceived the First World War as a moral turning point from which humankind had the possibility to be born again and undergo a path of historical renovation.
