The “Società Anonima Cementerie dell'Etiopia” was founded in August 1936. Its purpose was to build in Italian East Africa a number of factories for the production of cement and hydraulic binders to meet the demand coming from the Empire. Some technicians were sent to Ethiopia to search for limestone deposits and clayey materials suitable for the production of a good quality artificial cement. The quarries were identified near the cities of Dire Daua and Ambo'. Logistical difficulties drastically slowed down the work, and it was not until 1938-1939 that two cement plants came into operation.
