This article aims at illustrating some theoretical concepts and case studies related to urban sustainability. The first part of the article presents a brief introduction to the topic and delineates the main steps of the process towards sustainability that European cities should follow. Referring to key concepts adopted from the literature in the field of urban sustainability, the second part analyzes the different dimensions of sustainability that could be applied in the urban context: environmental, economic and social. The environmental dimension is analyzed through the concept of urban ecosystem; the economic dimension is described using the concepts of urban metabolism and the flows of the urban ecosystem. Lastly, the social dimension is defined in terms of environmental justice and urban political ecology. In the third part some case studies of European cities show the different improvements towards sustainability at the urban scale through the analysis of reports and projects. Stockholm and Oslo offer various paradigms of environmental sustainability, Nantes pays attention to the social dimension, and Bristol develops its sustainability based on the economic creativity.

Abstract
Stockholm and Oslo offer various paradigms of environmental sustainability, Nantes pays attention to the social dimension, and Bristol develops its sustainability based on the economic creativity.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
