I Contadini del sud e i peasant studies. Da Mosca a Nyeleni, passando per Tricarico e Portici

This article aims at pointing out some similarities and divergences between, on the one hand, the inquiries on the agriculture and rural areas of the Italian “Mezzogiorno” in the 1940s and 1950s (with particular attention to Manlio Rossi-Doria and Rocco Scotellaro) and, on the other, the global debate on peasants and agrarian change, that has been taking place, among else, on journals such as «The Journal of Peasant Studies», from the 1990s onwards. This contribution mainly focuses on three topics: firstly, the definition of the peasant issue and the methods by which to study rural transformations; secondly, the relationship between scholarly research on agrarian change and political and social activism; thirdly, the issue of the modernization of agriculture and the question on “who will feed the planet”.

L’obiettivo di questo contributo è indicare alcuni fili comuni e notare alcune strade divergenti tra le inchieste sull’agricoltura e le campagne del Mezzogiorno italiano degli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta (con particolare riferimento a Manlio Rossi-Doria e Rocco Scotellaro) e il dibattito globale sui contadini e sulle trasformazioni agrarie sviluppatosi soprattutto dagli anni Novanta in poi, ad esempio su riviste come «The Journal of Peasant Studies». L’articolo si sofferma su tre temi. Il primo concerne la definizione della questione contadina e i metodi con cui studiare le trasformazioni nelle campagne; il secondo è il rapporto tra la dimensione della ricerca sulle trasformazioni agrarie e quella dell’attivismo politico e sociale; il terzo è la questione della modernizzazione dell’agricoltura e la domanda su “chi nutrirà il pianeta”.
