The history of the idea of a fourth dimension in physics is very complex and interesting. It was first introduced by Henry More. I found out how the reading of St. Paul suggested it to More. I then show how this idea was neglected by Newton and how it was taken up until its introduction into relativistic dynamics by Henri Poincaré, Hermann Minkowski and Albert Einstein and its influence on literature and art.

Abstract

The history of the idea of a fourth dimension in physics is very complex and interesting. It was first introduced by Henry More. I found out how the reading of St. Paul suggested it to More. I then show how this idea was neglected by Newton and how it was taken up until its introduction into relativistic dynamics by Henri Poincaré, Hermann Minkowski and Albert Einstein and its influence on literature and art.
