Abstract

The disappointment with the outcome of the process of the Risorgimento is a recurring theme in Italian literature of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Federico De Roberto especially devoted to the problems of the "new Italy" much of his work, preparing for them a particular type of speech that, through the acquisition of formal criteria of authorial objectivity and distance permits the exercise of passionate irony and a biting parody against the political and social raelity. The reading and analysis of political speeches of Consalvo Uzeda of Francalanza, the absolute star of "I Viceré" and "L'imperio", allows us to recognize and isolate the various aspects of irony of De Roberto and connect it with the civil "rhetoric of dissent" in which De Roberto remains an unsurpassed master.
