The article begins by considering the differences that have become consolidated between two traditions of philosophical enquiry, the "analytic" and the "continental", proceeding then to consider how the leading techniques of logical analysis have developed since the times of Frege and Russell, with an eye to the questions of linguistic compositionality, the paradox of analysis, the 'paradigm of philosophy' that was Russell's theory of descriptions and the role of thought experiments in philosophical argumentation.
