Aim of this paper is to present a brief comparison between the work of Matayoshi Naoki and that of Dazai Osamu. After a short introduztion on the «Matayoshi pheonomenon» in contemporary Japanese literature and culture, this contribution draws a comparison between the representation of the city in Dazai Osamu’s Tōkyō hakkei (Eight views of Tokyo, 1941) and Matayoshi Naoki’s Tōkyō hyakkei (One hundred views of Tōkyō, 2013), in order to investigate how Matayoshi’s production has been influenced by Dazai’s legacy.
