Giovanni Calò wrote his first reflections on the relationship between school and work at the end of World War I, in the debate on school reform for economic, social and cultural renaissance of Italy. At that time, he followed the theory of an Italian economist, Filippo Carli, who emphasized the moral value of vocational education for young people. Calò supported that position also in Italian Parliament, with his several speeches to promote vocational education. During Fascism, Calò furthered those ideas linking them to the aim of spreading in Italy the principles of Arbeitsschule, developed by Georg Kerschensteiner. Calò identified in Arbeitsschule an important connection between Activism and Humanism, that represented an alternative to the corporatist school outlined by Bottai’s reform.

Abstract

Giovanni Calò wrote his first reflections on the relationship between school and work at the end of World War I, in the debate on school reform for economic, social and cultural renaissance of Italy.
