The essay focuses on Giambattista Vico as philosophical interpreter of the 12 labours of Hercules. This overall focus is mainly expressed in his view on Hercules as heros (demigod): since he is more than human but less than divine, his fatigues are a middle way between history and eternity, so that they aim at leading humanity towards gods. From a speculative point of view, not only are the labours a mythical story but they are the steps which establish the rules of civil life: actually, by his athla Hercules wins wild animals and cuts down unwelcoming forests so to found cities for civil life. As a result Vico points to labor generally in a positive way: while the Holy Bible and Hesiod wanted it to be a complete condemnation, Vico tends to consider work as a means of bringing human nature to its full flourishing.

Abstract
The essay focuses on Giambattista Vico as philosophical interpreter of the 12 labours of Hercules. This overall focus is mainly expressed in his view on Hercules as heros (demigod): since he is more than human but less than divine, his fatigues are a middle way between history and eternity, so that they aim at leading humanity towards gods. From a speculative point of view, not only are the labours a mythical story but they are the steps which establish the rules of civil life: actually, by his athla Hercules wins wild animals and cuts down unwelcoming forests so to found cities for civil life. As a result Vico points to labor generally in a positive way: while the Holy Bible and Hesiod wanted it to be a complete condemnation, Vico tends to consider work as a means of bringing human nature to its full flourishing.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
