The collection presents a theory of characters with a precise registry identity, photographed at a particular moment that can be define an impossible encounter with the other than oneself: "what underlies many of these stories" - Calvino writes in the Introductory Note to the work - "is a difficulty of communication, a zone of silence at the bottom of human relationships", so much so that the term adventure is almost ironic, since it often "indicates only an inner movement , the story of a state of mind, an itinerary toward silence".

La raccolta presenta una teoria di personaggi con una precisa identità anagrafica, fotografati in un particolare momento che si può definire un incontro impossibile con l’altro da sé: “ciò che sta alla base di molte di queste storie” – scrive Calvino nella Nota introduttiva all’opera – “è una difficoltà di comunicazione, una zona di silenzio al fondo dei rapporti umani”, tanto che il termine avventura è quasi ironico, dato che spesso “indica soltanto un movimento interiore, la storia d’uno stato d’animo, un itinerario verso il silenzio”.
