This essay aims at reconstructing the propagandistic origin of a motive permeating Medieval European literature – that of the “burning walnuts” – attested in its oldest version in the legend of the visit to Constantinople of Duke Robert the Magnificent of Normandy. This study also focuses on the analysis of the Norse rewritings of this topos, transfused into the Scandinavian literary tradition through the human and cultural exchange between Norman civilization and the people of the Far North.
