The digitalisation of manufacturing is a growing phenomenon that can improve business operations, however the adoption of new technologies can be difficult for small-medium enterprises (SMEs). Through a longitudinal case study, this article shows how SMEs can successfully undertake a digital innovation path, reporting what capabilities to develop at different stages to overcome barriers and what errors to avoid. The results offer practical contribution for managers of companies approaching the digitalisation of manufacturing and extend the concepts of dynamic capabilities within this phenomenon, thus offering a new theoretical basis for digitalisation research.

Abstract

The digitalisation of manufacturing is a growing phenomenon that can improve business operations, however the adoption of new technologies can be difficult for small-medium enterprises (SMEs). Through a longitudinal case study, this article shows how SMEs can successfully undertake a digital innovation path, reporting what capabilities to develop at different stages to overcome barriers and what errors to avoid. The results offer practical contribution for managers of companies approaching the digitalisation of manufacturing and extend the concepts of dynamic capabilities within this phenomenon, thus offering a new theoretical basis for digitalisation research.
