This article examines and analyses Praxilla’s fr. PMG 747, from a Hymn to Adonis, composed by this female poet, born and active in Sykion at the half of the fifth century bc. The fragment is put in comparison with the overall remains of Praxilla’s poetry, with Sappho’s fragments dedicated to Adonis, and with the threnodic tradition, both literary and epigrammatic, which presents several affinities. Praxilla’s style looks argute and humoristic, so that it was perceived as appropriate for the sympotic reception, giving the image of a female poet embedded with an original style, and well inserted in the poetic milieu of her region.

Abstract
This article examines and analyses Praxilla’s fr. PMG 747, from a Hymn to Adonis, composed by this female poet, born and active in Sykion at the half of the fifth century bc. The fragment is put in comparison with the overall remains of Praxilla’s poetry, with Sappho’s fragments dedicated to Adonis, and with the threnodic tradition, both literary and epigrammatic, which presents several affinities. Praxilla’s style looks argute and humoristic, so that it was perceived as appropriate for the sympotic reception, giving the image of a female poet embedded with an original style, and well inserted in the poetic milieu of her region.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
