This study investigates the succession process of a family business run by three families. We analyse how gender dynamics evolve during three deferred intergenerational transitions, one in each family and all from founder to second generation. Adopting a processual and interpretive research approach, we show how gendered norms within and between families change over time and influence the succession process as these evolving norms affect individuals’ roles and responsibilities. We contribute to the discussion of gender in family business, with a particular focus on intergenerational transitions and multi-family involvement.

Abstract

This study investigates the succession process of a family business run by three families. We analyse how gender dynamics evolve during three deferred intergenerational transitions, one in each family and all from founder to second generation. Adopting a processual and interpretive research approach, we show how gendered norms within and between families change over time and influence the succession process as these evolving norms affect individuals’ roles and responsibilities. We contribute to the discussion of gender in family business, with a particular focus on intergenerational transitions and multi-family involvement.
