Gender and Sexuality in the political experience of young people in Italy

This contribution aims to intersect youth and gender studies, in order to place the dimensions of body and sexuality at the centre of the discourse on transition to adulthood. These dimensions, often obscured by these studies, are instead strategic in the understanding of the embodied experiences that question the binary (and cis-hetero) norm, and so expanding the meanings associated with being and becoming an adult today. The chapter is based on longitudinal interviews (2 waves) with girls, lgbtqia+ people and people who question the normative dimensions of categories such as gender, body and sexuality, thanks to their lived experiences. In the current phase of uncertainty and structural crisis, the goal is to make room for the analysis of life paths traditionally left on the margins of the sociological gaze on transition, by showing how they carry meanings and perspectives that open up spaces of livability and gendered citizenship.
