The article reviews the relations between, on the one hand, René Descartes (1596-1650) and, on the other, the Jesuits of La Flèche, the Dutch Universities, the Roman Curia and, finally, the Sorbonne. Where a certain historiography views Descartes as in revolt against such institutions, the suggestion is made that, in each case, he sought their approval for his views.

Abstract

The article reviews the relations between, on the one hand, René Descartes (1596-1650) and, on the other, the Jesuits of La Flèche, the Dutch Universities, the Roman Curia and, finally, the Sorbonne. Where a certain historiography views Descartes as in revolt against such institutions, the suggestion is made that, in each case, he sought their approval for his views.
