The complex history of the construction of Bergamo Fortress has been the subject of numerous studies, mainly based on historical documents. It is only recently, however, that we have been able to carry out more extensive research into a previously overlooked section of the complex, which was one of the first parts to be built. These investigations involved geological, chemical, physical, and mechanical characterisation of samples obtained from the base of the wall. Moreover, a meticulous stratigraphic study of the wall surface also revealed valuable information about how the ancient site got organised.

Abstract

The complex history of the construction of Bergamo Fortress has been the subject of numerous studies, mainly based on historical documents. It is only recently, however, that we have been able to carry out more extensive research into a previously overlooked section of the complex, which was one of the first parts to be built. These investigations involved geological, chemical, physical, and mechanical characterisation of samples obtained from the base of the wall. Moreover, a meticulous stratigraphic study of the wall surface also revealed valuable information about how the ancient site got organised.
