This paper examines homophobic comments on Facebook and X (Twitter) regarding the same- sex marriage of Greek gay politician Stefanos Kasselakis. Following on previous research on hate speech in digitally-mediated environments and on the ‘moral turn’ to impoliteness, these comments are analysed as verbal aggressions triggered by an offending event that subverts the heterosexist moral order still prevalent in Modern Greek society. In addition to highlighting the different strategies used in both social networks, the suggested analysis unveils the discursive regularities of anti-LGBTQ speech, aimed at legitimising homophobia and normalizing the discrimination of sexual and gender diversity.

Abstract
This paper examines homophobic comments on Facebook and X (Twitter) regarding the same- sex marriage of Greek gay politician Stefanos Kasselakis. Following on previous research on hate speech in digitally-mediated environments and on the ‘moral turn’ to impoliteness, these comments are analysed as verbal aggressions triggered by an offending event that subverts the heterosexist moral order still prevalent in Modern Greek society. In addition to highlighting the different strategies used in both social networks, the suggested analysis unveils the discursive regularities of anti-LGBTQ speech, aimed at legitimising homophobia and normalizing the discrimination of sexual and gender diversity.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
