Born as a cast of the First Rome, Constantinople the Second Rome was during the Middle Ages the model for a series of urban centres and capital cities. In modern times, thanks to fascinating literary elaborations, it also became the symbol of the ideal city. This article therefore emphasises the original contributions of this specific aspect of the Byzantine world.
