The essay focuses on the political culture developed in Italy about the alliances of cities, which employed the ancient fraternity or sorority metaphor, in the age of revolutions, between 1796 and 1848. It traces the complex political use of the metaphor to legitimize the political and military role of the cities in the national movement, in a basic republican and confederal perspective, before the hypothesis of the Savoy, therefore monarchical, solution took the lead, supported by a transverse moderate national party.
