Greece occupies a significant place in the works of Théophile Gautier. The country is not only a textual presence for the frequent references to mythology and classic Art seen in the author's works, but it is also the object of some texts explicitly dedicated. The paper aims to explore the progressive passage from the travel story – contained in the six articles composing “Excursion in Greece” – to the fictionalization of this same journey in the tale Spirite. In all cases, it is a matter of an escape in the imaginary and in the ideal.

Abstract

Greece occupies a significant place in the works of Théophile Gautier. The country is not only a textual presence for the frequent references to mythology and classic Art seen in the author's works, but it is also the object of some texts explicitly dedicated. The paper aims to explore the progressive passage from the travel story – contained in the six articles composing “Excursion in Greece” – to the fictionalization of this same journey in the tale Spirite. In all cases, it is a matter of an escape in the imaginary and in the ideal.
