Abstract

Three essays on Pestalozzi. II - The problem of public education The winds of revolution sweeping through Europe in the 1790s redefined the parameters of the educational challenge. The reform efforts aimed at the working classes and the formation of a new political identity for the state brought the issue of education for the masses to the forefront. Questions arose about it, and there was a debate regarding who would benefit from this new educational paradigm. Fichte and Pestalozzi encapsulate the essence of this debate, which resurfaced prominently in the mid-twentieth century, manifesting in increasingly polarized positions at the opposite ends of an irreconcilable spectrum.
