The article shows how the Lega Nord was both a response to and a cause of the crisis of the traditional parties. The electoral growth of the Lega Nord in the early 1990s transformed a movement born in the countryside into a force capable of attracting support in the cities. Innovations in political language and the ability to exploit the media landscape and social dynamics (starting with migratory phenomena) turned the Lega into a breakaway party with national relevance. 1992 was a decisive year for the Lega Nord, both in electoral terms and with regard to its programme.
