The paper provides a brief overview of Painting Werther (2023), a video game adaptation of Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werther. By examining how the protagonists are depicted as well as some pivotal dramatic moments from the novel –scenes that have long been central to visual adaptations and illustrations – the analysis demonstrates how the ‘paintable graphic novel’ format accentuates and reinterprets key aspects of the text. This approach renders these elements more perceptible and reframes them within a contemporary context, linking the original work to issues relevant to modern audiences. In doing so, the adaptation not only honors the novel and its intended relationship with readers but also makes it more accessible and engaging for younger generations.

Abstract
The paper provides a brief overview of Painting Werther (2023), a video game adaptation of Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werther. By examining how the protagonists are depicted as well as some pivotal dramatic moments from the novel –scenes that have long been central to visual adaptations and illustrations – the analysis demonstrates how the ‘paintable graphic novel’ format accentuates and reinterprets key aspects of the text. This approach renders these elements more perceptible and reframes them within a contemporary context, linking the original work to issues relevant to modern audiences. In doing so, the adaptation not only honors the novel and its intended relationship with readers but also makes it more accessible and engaging for younger generations.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
