This paper aims at illustrating the benefits of the intercomprehension approach for the development of learner autonomy in foreign language learning and teaching in an academic context. For this purpose, an intercomprehension course for Romance languages implemented at the Language Centre of the University of Salzburg is described. It is argued that by focusing on learners’ metacognitive resources and enhancing learner involvement, the course enables participants to independently access texts in new Romance languages.

Abstract

This paper aims at illustrating the benefits of the intercomprehension approach for the development of learner autonomy in foreign language learning and teaching in an academic context. For this purpose, an intercomprehension course for Romance languages implemented at the Language Centre of the University of Salzburg is described. It is argued that by focusing on learners’ metacognitive resources and enhancing learner involvement, the course enables participants to independently access texts in new Romance languages.
