This chapter traces the difficult and complex (and interdisciplinary) trajectory of the concept of 'State' in European historical research and historiographical debate. Essentially, it covers the journey from its rejection to its acceptance, and finally to its 'autonomy' between the 1960s and the end of the twentieth century, in light of the development of supranational institutions and globalization.
