This article examines whether Meibauer’s (2020) linguistic theory of bullshit can be applied to an interview with the Italian politician Matteo Salvini about the war in Ukraine. It will be shown that (i) the linguistic indicators of Bullshit identified by Meibauer are detectable in the interview and (ii) Salvini uses a particularly convincing information-structural strategy of bullshit based on intonation and gestures.

Abstract

This article examines whether Meibauer’s (2020) linguistic theory of bullshit can be applied to an interview with the Italian politician Matteo Salvini about the war in Ukraine. It will be shown that (i) the linguistic indicators of Bullshit identified by Meibauer are detectable in the interview and (ii) Salvini uses a particularly convincing information-structural strategy of bullshit based on intonation and gestures.
