While so-called “plant studies,” which are flourishing in the current eco-critical debate, examine the custom of writing poetry about herbs, flowers, and plants from a bioethical and scientific perspective, and while a copious series of recent essays investigate the agency of the latter in verse writing, sometimes proposing suggestive parallels between plant morphogenesis and the genesis of the poem or between the composition of herbariums and that of the lyrical verb, the following reflections will attempt to approach "CICLI. Un erbario" by Hannimari Heino, leaving the above-mentioned critical orientations in the background to focus on another aspect, no less material and perhaps no less crucial, of the intertwining of the plant world and poetry, by showing how poetic agency and plant agency cooperate in this long, narrative poem.
