The objective of the paper is to present the evolution of the mapmaking process among traditional societies, taking as an example the case of Sub-Saharan Africa. The discussions held in recent decades have focused on mapping produced in the US context. However, the African context is an interesting case to analyze for the development of an alternative model to colonial mapping performed by individuals not belonging to the institutional western mapping institutions.
