The objective of the paper is to present the evolution of the mapmaking process among traditional societies, taking as an example the case of Sub-Saharan Africa. The discussions held in recent decades have focused on mapping produced in the US context. However, the African context is an interesting case to analyze for the development of an alternative model to colonial mapping performed by individuals not belonging to the institutional western mapping institutions.

Abstract

Cet article présente l'évolution de la cartographie réalisée auprès des sociétés traditionnelles, prenant comme exemple le cas de l’Afrique subsaharienne. Les réflexions menées ces dernières décennies sur le sujet ont privilégié dans le contexte américain. Cependant le contexte africain constitue un cas intéressant pour analyser le développement d'une cartographie alternative à celle du modèle colonial, réalisée par des individus n'appartenant pas au milieu de la cartographie institutionnelle, de matrice occidentale.
