The Old Norse term "kuml" (or "kumbl") has long posed a challenge to scholars of Germanic philology, due to its obscure etymology and the complex semantic development of its cognates across several early Germanic languages. Described as one of the most mysterious words of Germanic antiquity, "kuml" has so far been examined primarily in connection with the earliest runic inscriptions in which it appears. This article offers a comprehensive investigation of the term, drawing on both epigraphic and manuscript evidence, and ultimately proposes a new etymological reconstruction alongside an interpretive model for understanding its intricate diachronic evolution.

Abstract
The Old Norse term "kuml" (or "kumbl") has long posed a challenge to scholars of Germanic philology, due to its obscure etymology and the complex semantic development of its cognates across several early Germanic languages. Described as one of the most mysterious words of Germanic antiquity, "kuml" has so far been examined primarily in connection with the earliest runic inscriptions in which it appears. This article offers a comprehensive investigation of the term, drawing on both epigraphic and manuscript evidence, and ultimately proposes a new etymological reconstruction alongside an interpretive model for understanding its intricate diachronic evolution.| File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
