“Misunderstanding” has been treated mostly as a problem to overcome instead of as a source of knowledge. In contrast to this, the essay consider “misunderstanding” as a necessary aspect of development of the unnamed disciplines to which Georges Devereux and Aby Warburg dedicated their life. When they were young scholars, they both encountered the Hopi. The Natives were undergoing a fundamental political and cultural crisis. For different reasons Warburg and Devereux did not understand the native culture they observed. This misunderstanding had an immediate and lasting impact on their works and lives: they have become useful figures for a variety of methodological approaches (such as “Ethnopsychiatry” and “Iconology”) that attempt to unsettle dogmatic disciplinarity.

Abstract
“Misunderstanding” has been treated mostly as a problem to overcome instead of as a source of knowledge. In contrast to this, the essay consider “misunderstanding” as a necessary aspect of development of the unnamed disciplines to which Georges Devereux and Aby Warburg dedicated their life. When they were young scholars, they both encountered the Hopi. The Natives were undergoing a fundamental political and cultural crisis. For different reasons Warburg and Devereux did not understand the native culture they observed. This misunderstanding had an immediate and lasting impact on their works and lives: they have become useful figures for a variety of methodological approaches (such as “Ethnopsychiatry” and “Iconology”) that attempt to unsettle dogmatic disciplinarity.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
