The paper provides a corpus-based description of the semantic and syntactic features of the Italian adverb intanto, with the aim of evaluating its functional evolution from older to contemporary stages. Diachronic and synchronic data show a variation in the form and a functional fluidity, which is not limited to the temporal area. It is hypothesized that the different functions of intanto have gradually become entrenched, following a path of grammaticalization and pragmaticalization.

L’article décrit les propriétés syntactico-sémantiques de l’adverbe italien intanto, afin d’évaluer son évolution fonctionnelle des stades anciens aux contemporains. Les données diachroniques et synchroniques extraites des corpus montrent une variation formelle et une fluidité fonctionnelle qui ne se limitent pas à la valeur temporelle. L’hypothèse est que les multiples fonctions de intanto se sont progressivement enracinées, suivant un processus de grammaticalisation et de pragmaticalisation
