This paper opens with an overview of the most ancient vernacular translations of Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris (one of his most widespread work throughout the xivth and xvth centuries), then it focuses on the French reception of the De mulieribus, commonly known as «Cleres femmes». The essay traces the main studies on this translation, and moreover it provides the first in-depth analysis of the relationship between the French vernacular translation and the Latin work in its different stages. Finally, it has been possible to state that the French vernacular translation derives from the seventh stage of Zaccaria’s scheme (stage A in the most recent proposal to reduce the number of phases from nine to two).
