The article deals with work policing activity by the police head office in Milan (Questura) in the years immediately following italian national unity. The establishment of a new constitutional government encouraged urban workmen to claim better job conditions through an early series of strikes. The study explores the cultural attitudes and strategies of the police in facing this challenge.
